Social Media May Potentially Hurting Your Career

Today's generation has a ginormous amount of people whose lives evolve around social media. The majority of people in society could not even go ten minutes without using their cell phones. For others, social media is the way of life. People rely heavily on social networking because they truly believe that opportunities grow more and more by online and gadget sources and only that. Truth be told, social media is not the only source to make your career life opportunities expand. In fact, social media might be interfering with your career.

Experts say that the majority of social media users are millennials. Millennials, also known as "Echo Boomers", is defined as young people who are reaching adulthood in the early 21st century. Additionally, the millennial generation started in the early 1980s all throughout the 1990s all the way to early 2000s as the ending birth years. The most successful people such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and Martha Stewart said that the millennials spend too much time on social media. The young people in this generation are at the age where they are at the stage of figuring out what opportunities and careers they want out of life. When an individual spends their time on a gadget containing social media and other online sources that are useless, they are truly wasting their opportunities to work toward something that they would like to achieve out of life in general instead of abusing the use of technology. Am I saying that social media usage is terrible? No. However, everything has a balance. What we use, where we go, what we do, there is always a time and a place for everything. Social media is a great tool to reach out to others and keep them posted about certain events going on in your life that may possibly entertain others and feed them ideas as well.

There is an article on CNBC that relates to my point being here. Success expert Richard St. John makes a valid reasoning when he states social media usage. "Every minute you spend on social media is a minute lost in your career. One will make you money, the other won't." says St. John. His point is that all the time that we spend using social media is time we can use to work towards our goals that would get us to reach our primary goal which is usually a career. The issue with today is that Millennials will only rely on social media to look for business opportunities. Although social media has become a great source to look for career opportunities, again, it is NOT THE ONLY useful source for that. Furthermore, people who heavily rely on social media lose their social skills because social media usage prevents others from meeting people in person. Instead, they rely heavily on only their gadgets to socialize with others.

According to St. John, he states that today's version of being social is using digital devices via social media. St. John also makes a valid point when he talks about the most successful people focusing on their goal and weren't even involved in socializing. "The most successful people weren't doing the social thing when they were younger. Instead, they kept it to themselves and focused on their GOAL." says St. John.
